To make a day of it

Burgstall Lauter stands in Lauter (Laubach) (Landkreis Gießen), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Lauter marks the site of a small, long vanished hill castle perched at 217 metres on a rocky spur above the Bingmühle, near Lauter, a district of Laubach. It is not a castle to tour in the usual sense but a quiet archaeological spot in the woods. The only feature still visible today is the rock cut neck ditch, now partly filled in, that once isolated the fortification from the spur. No masonry remains, since the castle was destroyed in 1618 and its stones were reused to rebuild the nearby mill.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains, only a rock cut ditch still marks where the castle once stood.
  • The site lies in the forest, away from tourist infrastructure, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open outdoor site with no visitor facilities.
  • The appeal is mainly historical and scenic, suited to those interested in faint traces rather than imposing ruins.
