To make a day of it
Badenburg (Gießen) stands in Gießen (Landkreis Gießen), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Badenburg stands on the banks of the Lahn river in Gießen, at a point where the water runs over small rapids. Built in the 14th century by lords who used it to control a vital riverside path linking Lollar and Gießen, it passed through several noble families over the centuries before becoming, from 1760 onward, a well known inn among the students of Gießen. Georg Büchner hid here together with republican revolutionaries, an episode that still marks the site's history. The Badenburg today houses a restaurant, the Ritterkeller.
What to know
- The site today houses a restaurant, the Ritterkeller, so a visit is mainly linked to dining rather than to a museum-style tour.
- The riverside path leading to the Badenburg is closed to motor traffic and forms a popular stretch of the Lahntalradweg cycle route.
- Part of the path is unpaved, so sturdy footwear or a suitable bike are advisable for the walk or ride.
- There are no fixed opening hours or admission fees, as the building functions as a restaurant rather than a monument with public visiting hours.
- The building is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse.
