To make a day of it
Burg Hessenstein stands in Vöhl (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on September 25, 2026.
Hessenstein Castle stands on a wooded spur of the Keseberg hill above the Eder valley, reached mainly on foot along the hiking trails of the Kellerwald. Built in the 14th century by Landgrave Henry II of Hesse to replace an earlier destroyed stronghold, it later served as an administrative seat before becoming, in 1922, one of the very first youth hostels in Hesse. The facades of the main building and the gatehouse still show much of their medieval appearance despite later renovations. The site now functions as a hostel and meeting place, set in a remote, heavily wooded landscape.
