To make a day of it

Schloss Friedrichstein stands in Bad Wildungen (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. Adult admission costs 8 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Friedrichstein rises above Bad Wildungen on the Schlossberg, on the site of a Gothic stronghold founded around 1200 by the counts of Thuringia and later held by the counts of Waldeck. From 1663 Count Josias II of Waldeck began converting it into a Baroque residence on a triangular plan modelled on French design, a project completed in the early 18th century by Friedrich Anton Ulrich von Waldeck, who gave the schloss its name. Today it houses a hunting museum displaying the so called Turkish booty of Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel, and visitors can follow a sculpture trail laid out around the building since 2006.

What to know

  • The schloss functions as a museum, with a collection devoted to hunting and to Landgrave Karl's so called Turkish booty.
  • A sculpture trail has circled the building since 2006, offering another way to explore the grounds.
  • The site sits on top of the Schlossberg, meaning visitors should expect an uphill approach.
  • The Gothic round tower of the medieval stronghold survived the later Baroque rebuilding.
