To make a day of it
Schloss Landau stands in Landau (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Landau stands at the edge of the old town of Landau, now a district of Bad Arolsen in Hesse. Originally a 13th century fortification, it was converted into a residence around 1330 by Count Heinrich IV von Waldeck and later housed several generations of the Waldeck family through repeated rebuildings from the 16th to the 18th century. Its original burial chapel, built in Romanesque style, later became the town church, sitting at the highest point of the Schlossberg, while the castle itself remains at the edge of the historic quarter.
What to know
- The castle stood empty for several years after a care home closed there in 2012, before a private owner took it over from 2015.
- The building now houses a hotel and seminar facilities, so public visits are mainly limited to the grounds and certain accessible areas.
- The former castle chapel, now the town's Protestant church, is a separate visit, standing at the top of the Schlossberg.
- The garden, a former therapy garden with a historic stone fountain, is intended to remain open to the public.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
