To make a day of it

Burg Treis (Staufenberg) stands in Staufenberg (Landkreis Gießen), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Treis Castle, also known as Burg am Wasser, stands on the right bank of the Lumda river, in the Treis an der Lumda district of Staufenberg. Little is documented about its past, though it is believed to have been built in the mid-16th century by the elder branch of the Schutzbar family, called Milchling. What remains today includes ring walls over a metre thick running along the river, a turret with corbels built into a small house on the west side, and a massive round tower to the south, nicknamed the thieves' tower. The site is privately owned, so a visit is essentially a view from outside.
