Only remains of retaining walls survive, found in a wooded area behind the present Herrenhaus, a classicist three-storey building set on a cellar base. The estate, first recorded in 1252 in the records of Arnsburg Abbey under the name Winderode, originally consisted of a farming manor with its own church. The fortified site is attributed to the lords of Windhausen, who held Winnerod.
