Burg Wildenburg stands on a rocky spur, steep on three sides, above the village bearing the same name near Friesenhagen. Ancestral seat of the lords of Wildenburg, it once overlooked the trade route linking the Sieg valley with the Berg region. Largely ruined after being used as a stone quarry in the 19th century, it still preserves a round keep over twenty metres high topped with a baroque dome, along with remnants of buildings dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Only the outer bailey can be visited, as the remaining buildings are privately owned.
What to know
- Only the outer bailey (Vorburg) is open to the public, the remaining buildings being privately owned, including a forestry office.
- Much of the site is ruined, with uneven terrain typical of a rocky spur location.
- There are no fixed opening hours, as the outer bailey is freely accessible.
- The castle is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
