The Freusburg stands on a rocky spur above the Sieg valley, in Freusburg, a district of the town of Kirchen in the Westerwald region. First recorded in 913 under a name referring to a manorial estate, the castle is thought to date from around 1100 and was renovated in the late 16th century under Count Heinrich IV of Sayn. Since 1928 the building has served as a youth hostel, following alterations by the Düsseldorf architect Ernst Stahl and a thorough renovation reopened in 1986. From the site there are views over the surrounding woodland and down into the Sieg valley, with the Freusburg mill below.
