Wellheim Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a Jurassic rock above the market town of Wellheim, overlooking the dry valley once carved by the ancient Danube, known as the Wellheimer Trockental. Abandoned and partly torn down from the 18th century onward, and later quarried for stone, it still preserves its curtain walls, a roughly 35-metre square keep and the remains of upper, middle and lower baileys. The approach road runs through two tunnels cut directly into the castle rock below the ruins.
