Burg Maubach rises on a rocky spur above the Rur valley in the municipality of Kreuzau. Founded in the 12th century by Count Adalbert of Nörvenich, the castle owes much of its present Gothic structure, including a residential tower with walls two and a half metres thick, to building work carried out around 1350 under Edmund von Engelsdorf. Further additions followed in the 15th century, among them a gate tower, defensive wall and round prison tower, while an 18th-century baroque remodelling gave the manor house its current mansard roof. Owned by the von Spee family since 1874, the castle was restored after suffering heavy damage during the fighting in the Hürtgen Forest in 1944 and 1945.
