To make a day of it

Burg Hardenstein stands in Witten (Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Hardenstein Castle is a ruin standing on the southern bank of the Ruhr, between Herbede and the centre of Witten, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Built in the 14th century as a fortified residence rather than a true stronghold, it was the scene of a notorious feud with Dortmund before falling gradually into ruin from the 18th century onward. What remains today are parts of the enclosing wall and two flanking towers, cared for by a local heritage association since the 1970s. The place is also tied to the old legend of a dwarf king named Goldemar.
