The Burg Wetter stands in ruins on a spur of the Ardey hills above the Harkort lake, in the town of Wetter. Built in the 13th century by the Counts of the Marck as an outpost against the neighbouring Burg Volmarstein, it later served as a regional administrative seat before falling into decay, and in the 19th century housed one of the Ruhr region's earliest mechanical engineering workshops, founded by Friedrich Harkort. Today only remnants of the keep and the residential building survive, overlooking the half-timbered quarter of the Freiheit Wetter.
