Burg Kempen stands in the historic centre of Kempen, in the Kreis Viersen. Built in the 14th century as a territorial stronghold for the archbishop-electors of Cologne, it guarded the north-western edge of their lands against the duchy of Jülich and Brabant. A mid-19th-century fire destroyed much of the building, which was then rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, giving it back the look of a fortress rather than a stately residence. Visitors today can see its two brick wings, round crenellated corner towers, and a striking gatehouse bearing a carved double coat of arms.
