To make a day of it

Burg Hüls stands in Krefeld (Krefeld), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Hüls stands in the Hüls district of Krefeld as the ruin of a moated castle whose construction began in 1455, after Archbishop Dietrich II von Moers granted permission to the knight Friedrich von Hüls. Repeatedly destroyed during the conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries, it finally collapsed in 1686 and has remained a ruin ever since. The remains visible today, including the tower, the wall walk and the courtyard, result from clearing and partial rebuilding works carried out by volunteers from the late 1990s onward. The restored tower now houses a room used for civil wedding ceremonies.

What to know

  • The site can be freely visited from the outside, with a path and benches circling the ruin.
  • This is a partially restored ruin rather than an intact castle, so the visit is limited to the surroundings and outer remains.
  • The restored tower serves as a civil wedding room and is therefore not permanently open to the public.
  • The grounds are illuminated at night by ground lighting.
  • No verified information is available on opening hours or fees, as the site is freely accessible.
