The Burg Wachtendonk is the ruin of a lowland castle set at the edge of a small wood on the left bank of the Niers, on the southern edge of the town of Wachtendonk in North Rhine-Westphalia. It grew from an early fortification built on a raised mound called a donk in the marshy river lowlands, and the settlement that formed under its protection took its name. Long contested between the Duchy of Guelders and the Electorate of Cologne, and later between the Dutch States General and imperial Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War, it was so badly damaged when captured in 1603 that it was never rebuilt. Its foundations were uncovered and partly rebuilt during excavations in the 1960s, and these form the visible remains today.
