To make a day of it

Haus Donk stands in Tönisvorst (Kreis Viersen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Haus Donk is a small former moated stronghold in the Vorst district of Tönisvorst. Its origins go back to 1259 as a fief of the Electorate of Cologne, though its timber-framed tower is thought to date from around 900, built by the Franks on an artificial motte. The site once marked the border of the Amt of Kempen against the duchies of Jülich and Guelders. Destroyed in the 19th century and rebuilt in the 1970s, it was later restored and extended in the 1990s.

What to know

  • The building seen today is only part of the original manor house, which was once three times larger.
  • The moat surrounding the former farmyard outbuildings is still visible.
  • The property served for a long time as a private residence and event venue, including civil wedding ceremonies held in its Rittersaal.
  • Extensive renovations took place starting in February 2020, after which the property was sold on.
  • No public visiting hours or admission details are available for this site.
