To make a day of it

Burg Sievernich stands in Vettweiß (Kreis Düren), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Sievernich Castle stands beside the Neffelbach stream in the municipality of Vettweiß. This former moated stronghold, first recorded with a named lord in 1153, still shows the layout of a water castle: a three-winged main house fronted by a three-winged outer bailey. Most of the surviving structure dates from the 15th century onward, with significant alterations carried out around 1860 under the Schwecht family, who have owned the estate since 1841. The property today houses a stud farm for Trakehner horses and remains privately owned.

What to know

  • Sievernich Castle is privately owned and operates as a stud farm for Trakehner horses, which limits access to the interior.
  • The castle can be viewed from the village surroundings and along the Neffelbach stream, near the route of the old Roman road from Zülpich to Neuss.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are published, as the site is not run as a conventional tourist attraction.
  • The exterior, with its moat and three-winged layout, is the main point of interest for visitors passing through Vettweiß.
