The Kurkölnische Landesburg Zülpich stands on the site of a former Roman castellum, on the Mühlenberg hill in the old town centre. The present gothic fortress, with its four towers and quadrangular plan, was completed at the end of the 14th century under the Archbishopric of Cologne, as part of its territorial administration. After a fire in the late 17th century it was rebuilt as a baroque residence, later served as an industrial distillery through the 19th and 20th centuries, and now houses exhibition spaces, workshops and a local history centre.
