After Countess Augusta of Manderscheid-Blankenheim fled with her family in 1794 as French revolutionary troops advanced, the site stood empty for decades before being secured and eventually converted into a youth hostel in the 20th century. Visitors today find a layered architectural ensemble reflecting nearly nine centuries of occupation.
