# Burg Blankenheim

Blankenheim, Kreis Euskirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Burg Blankenheim stands in Blankenheim (Kreis Euskirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Blankenheim Castle overlooks the village of Blankenheim in the Eifel region, on a ridge where Gerhard I raised the first fortress around 1115. Once the seat of the lords, later counts, of Blankenheim, the complex was gradually transformed over the centuries from a medieval defensive stronghold into a Baroque schloss with a garden and an orangery. After Countess Augusta of Manderscheid-Blankenheim fled with her family in 1794 as French revolutionary troops advanced, the site stood empty for decades before being secured and eventually converted into a youth hostel in the 20th century. Visitors today find a layered architectural ensemble reflecting nearly nine centuries of occupation.
