To make a day of it

Altenburg (Blankenheimerdorf) stands in Blankenheim (Kreis Euskirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Recorded dating: 13th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Altenburg is a former motte-and-bailey stronghold dating from the 13th century, now in ruins, on the edge of the village of Blankenheimerdorf within the municipality of Blankenheim. It stands on a natural rock outcrop whose sides were artificially cut back, rising above a marshy valley. Little survives beyond foundations and traces of a ditch, though the shape of the fortified rock is still clearly visible in the landscape. The stronghold was given up once the lordly family had a new castle built at Blankenheim itself.
