To make a day of it
Burg Neuenburg (Durach) stands in Durach (Landkreis Oberallgäu), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Neuenburg stands as a ruin on a wooded spur southeast of Durach, within a loop of the Durach river that shields the site on three sides. Built after 1300 by a branch of the lords of Sulzberg, it went through sieges and occupations before being abandoned in the 17th century and later quarried for stone. What remains today is chiefly the stump of the keep, partly destroyed by a blast around 1893, along with sections of wall and traces of an outer bailey. A riverside path called the Wasserweg runs through the loop below the castle, fitted with information panels.
What to know
- The site is a freely accessible ruin, with no known opening hours or admission fee.
- Reaching it involves a steep footpath climbing from the floor of the Durach valley.
- Only the partly collapsed keep and some sections of the outer wall and bailey survive.
- The valley path, the Wasserweg, offers an easier alternative with information panels along the way.
- The uneven and sometimes unstable ground calls for sturdy footwear and care.
