To make a day of it

Burg Laubenbergerstein stands in Immenstadt im Allgäu (Landkreis Oberallgäu), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Laubenbergerstein stands in ruins on a rocky spur above the Iller river, about one kilometre north of Immenstadt im Allgäu. Likely founded in the 12th century by the bishops of Augsburg to guard a river crossing and its toll station, it was expanded in the 15th century by the von Laubenberg family, who built a massive artillery tower there. Restored in stages since 1977, the site now displays this tower along with remains of the residential hall and several fortified gates. Costumed enthusiasts, the so called Laubenberger Ritter, occasionally bring the ruins to life and explain medieval daily routines to visitors.

What to know

  • Costumed members of the Laubenberger Ritter group occasionally animate the ruins, though without a fixed schedule.
  • The wooded, uneven terrain calls for sturdy footwear suited to forest walking.
