To make a day of it
Burg Burgberg stands in Burgberg im Allgäu (Landkreis Oberallgäu), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Burgberg, also known as Burg Heimenhofen, is a ruined hilltop castle perched on a limestone outcrop at the western foot of the Grünten, above the village of Burgberg im Allgäu. What remains, chiefly a stretch of the north wall and the remnants of a residential tower counted among the oldest of its kind in the Allgäu, dates largely to the early 12th century, with an eastward extension added around 1330. After passing through several noble families, the castle burned during the Thirty Years' War and was later stripped for building stone by villagers. Conservation work carried out between 1992 and 1997 secured the surviving masonry seen today.
What to know
- The castle plateau with the secured north wall is freely accessible, but most other remains lie on private land and are partly at risk of collapse.
- A short path leads up from the village to the plateau of the ruin.
- No verified opening hours or admission fees are available, so the site is visited freely from the outside.
- An information panel with a site plan stands to the east, at the foot of the castle hill.
- Only wall fragments and a tower remnant survive, there is no habitable building or interior to visit.
