The Burgruine Sulzberg stands on a wooded sandstone hill southwest of the village of Sulzberg, in the Oberallgäu district. Built around 1170 by the lords of Sulzberg, it later passed to the Schellenberg family and then to the Fürststift Kempten, before being abandoned and stripped for building stone by local residents. A 24 metre keep and sections of the outer walls survive, restored since the 1980s through the efforts of a local heritage association.

What to know

  • A small museum displaying archaeological finds is housed inside the keep.
  • The keep's viewing platform looks out over the northern Oberallgäu.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
