To make a day of it

Burg Rettenberg stands in Rettenberg (Landkreis Oberallgäu), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Rettenberg stands in ruins on a rocky spur of the Rottachberg, high above the Iller valley in the Oberallgäu region. Founded around 1100 by the powerful lords of Rettenberg, it later passed to the Bishopric of Augsburg and was largely destroyed by fire in 1562, from which it never truly recovered. Today only two tall stretches of wall remain, remnants of one of the oldest tower castles in the Allgäu, in a fragile structural state.

What to know

  • The site is a ruin, partly fenced off since 2013 due to rockfall danger.
  • The walk up from the former Amtshaus in Vorderburg, on a marked trail, takes about 20 minutes.
  • From the Rottachmühle in the Iller valley, reaching the ruin takes nearly an hour on foot.
  • There is no visitor infrastructure, no opening hours and no admission fee, access is free and unsupervised.
  • The uneven terrain and lack of safety measures make the site unsuitable for visitors with reduced mobility.
