The Burg Werdenstein is a ruined stronghold set on a sandstone hill above the Iller valley near Immenstadt im Allgäu. It was once the ancestral seat of the von Werdenstein family, first recorded in 1239, but lost most of its walls over the centuries, first through pillaging and later through use as a stone quarry in the 19th century. Only the gatehouse tower, roughly six metres tall, has survived and was restored in the late 20th century. The grounds, now largely home to an open-air café, can be visited freely.
