The Burg Kempe is a medieval ruin set on a slate outcrop above the Freiberger Mulde river, in Mahlitzsch, a district of Roßwein. Built in the 13th century, likely as a toll station and refuge stronghold, it served as the seat of the von Mals family before gradually falling into decay from 1298 onward. Visitors can still make out the three levels of the former residential tower, once entered through a raised doorway, along with remains of an underground water supply designed to withstand a lengthy siege. The site also carries a local legend of a young woman turned into a serpent by an offended gypsy woman, said to be still waiting for a liberating kiss.
