To make a day of it
Burg Döbeln stands in Döbeln (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
Nothing standing remains of the hilltop fortress that once overlooked the Freiberger Mulde east of Döbeln: Burg Döbeln has vanished from the landscape, cleared away in the 19th century to make room for a school. Its history goes back to a Slavic stronghold built before 929, later rebuilt in stone from the 13th century, and first recorded in 981 when it was granted to Memleben Abbey. The site today is marked mainly by its name and location, the Schlossberg, rather than by visible ruins.
What to know
- No building survives above ground; the site is the Schlossberg, a rocky spur above the Freiberger Mulde.
- The remaining ruins were cleared away between 1867 and 1869 to build a school and a gymnasium.
- There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since the castle itself no longer exists.
- A visit amounts to a walk up the hill on the eastern edge of Döbeln, with no marked trail known.
