To make a day of it

Burg Tharandt stands in Tharandt (Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Tharandt sits on a rocky spur encircled by the Schloitzbach stream and the Wilde Weißeritz river, right in the town of Tharandt in Saxony. Founded in the early 13th century by Margrave Dietrich of Meissen to guard the border against the burgraves of Dohna, it was rebuilt between 1240 and 1256 under Henry the Illustrious and became one of the strongest strongholds in the region. Only scattered remains survive today, much of the stone having been reused to build the neighbouring church after the site was abandoned in the 16th century. The place, favoured by Romantic painters from around 1800 onward, still carries that picturesque rediscovery of the ruin.

What to know

  • Only wall fragments and foundations remain, with no intact building to visit.
  • The site lies directly within the town of Tharandt, within walking distance of the centre.
  • An open-air theatre now occupies the former upper castle courtyard.
  • Reaching the promontory involves a sloping path, requiring some physical effort.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are listed, as the ruin is viewed outdoors and freely.
