To make a day of it
Burg Herrnstein stands in Ruppichteroth (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Herrnstein sits on a rocky spur above the Bröl valley, between Bröleck and Ingersau. Founded around 1300 as a fortified house of the lords vam Steyne, it grew over the centuries into a typical Rhenish hillside castle, before major rebuilding around 1800 gave it much of its present form. Remnants of the founding period survive, including vaulted cellars and a northern shield wall, alongside baroque additions such as windows and a staircase. The half-timbered eastern gable of the manor house and the gatehouse with its two original towers remain the most striking features today.
What to know
- Only the outer grounds of the castle can be visited, usually on the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m.
- The interior of the manor house is not open to the public.
- The approach from the south, where the fortified gatehouse stands, is moderately steep.
- At the foot of the rocky spur, large ponds, former branches of the Bröl river, recall the water-filled moats that once encircled the site.
