Burg Blankenberg (Sieg) stands in Hennef (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Blankenberg Castle stands on a ridge 152 metres above a bend of the Sieg river, in the Stadt Blankenberg district of Hennef. This medieval ruin still shows a compact fortified layout with four towers, once contested between the Counts of Sayn and the Dukes of Berg. Its round keep remains the tallest structure, while the southern St George's Tower gives views over the Ahrenbach and Sieg valleys. A herb garden has been planted on the former bastion area.
What to know
- Only the main castle (Hauptburg), owned by the city of Hennef, can be visited; the outer bailey (Vorburg) is private and closed to the public.
- The keep cannot be climbed, but the St George's Tower offers panoramic views over the surrounding valleys.
- The herb garden on the bastion is open whenever the castle grounds themselves are accessible.
- An annual contemporary art exhibition, 'Kunst auf Burg Blankenberg', has been held in the ruins since 2012.
- The site sits on a hilltop above the Sieg river, so visitors should expect a walk with some incline.
