Schloss Arenfels stands in Bad Hönningen (Landkreis Neuwied), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Arenfels overlooks the Rhine above Bad Hönningen, built on a rocky outcrop where the lords of Isenburg raised a first stronghold in the 13th century. Of that medieval structure only the masonry base of the keep remains, absorbed into later buildings during the Renaissance. The castle's current appearance, with its turrets, stepped gables and ochre-rendered walls, dates from a mid 19th century Neo-Gothic remodelling directed by Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, the architect also known for Cologne Cathedral. Inside, period features survive, including a knights' hall and a cast-iron staircase made at the Sayn ironworks.
