Burg Linz stands at the northern edge of the old town of Linz am Rhein, close to the Rhine, where it once formed part of the town's fortifications. Built in the 14th century by the archbishop and elector of Cologne to secure his territory and collect river tolls, it was besieged and damaged in 1475, then almost entirely rebuilt in the early 18th century into the four-winged complex around a square courtyard seen today. Only the northwest corner tower, round in its lower stories and octagonal above, with a steep Gothic roof, survives from the original medieval structure. Now in private hands, the castle is no longer open to visitors and can only be viewed from outside.
