Burg Olbrück rises on a 460-metre phonolite cone above the Brohl valley in the eastern Eifel. Founded around 1100, this ruined hilltop castle ranks among the oldest and largest of its kind in the region, built on a diamond-shaped layout. Its keep, dating from the mid-14th century and standing over 34 metres tall, can be visited and now houses exhibits on castle building and history, with a viewing platform looking out over the Rhine, the Ahr hills and, on clear days, as far as Cologne Cathedral.
