The Burg Neuenahr stands as a ruin on a basalt hill overlooking the lower Ahr valley, at Bad Neuenahr. Founded around 1225 by Count Otto von Neuenahr, it served as the seat of the County of Neuenahr until it was destroyed in 1372 on the order of the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III von Saarwerden, who sought to put an end to the robber knights occupying it.
