To make a day of it

Burg Freudenberg stands in Freudenberg (Main-Tauber-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Freudenberg stands above the town of Freudenberg and the Main valley on a wooded slope, built from the end of the 12th century onward by the Würzburg bishop Heinrich III of Berg. It passed to the lords of Dürn and then to the counts of Wertheim, who extended it repeatedly until it became, around 1500, a fortified stronghold with a massive keep and walls running down to the river. Abandoned after the Wertheim line died out and left to decay for centuries, the ruin was cleared and restored in the 20th century and opened again to visitors in 1995. Today visitors can see the remains of the palas, the surrounding walls and a three-stage keep built in successive phases.
