Burg Wertheim stands in Wertheim (Main-Tauber-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Adult admission costs 2 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Wertheim rises above the town of Wertheim on a rocky spur where the Main and Tauber rivers meet. Now a ruin, it ranks among the largest stone fortresses in southern Germany, with a surviving keep, remains of the residential hall and several rings of walls added between the Middle Ages and the early seventeenth century. The complex ceased to serve as a residence after being damaged during the Thirty Years' War, yet its layout remains easy to follow along the paths crossing the grounds. The sweeping view over the old town and the river confluence is one of the main reasons visitors climb up.
What to know
- The climb up from the old town is on foot and requires some physical effort due to the slope and uneven paths.
- Visitors can explore the ruins freely, and guided tours covering the site's history are also available.
- A restaurant housed within the castle buildings offers a terrace overlooking the town, though this is separate from visiting the monument itself.
- The site is accessible year round, though conditions along the outdoor route can vary with the season and weather.
- Parking and full accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility are not specified, so checking locally is advisable.
