To make a day of it
Burg Bürgeln stands in Bürgeln (Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf), in Hesse, Germany. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Bürgeln, also known as Birgel, is a former hilltop castle that no longer stands, located in Bürgeln, a district of the municipality of Cölbe in Hesse. Likely built in the 14th century by the lords of Fleckenbühl, it was torn down at an unknown date, probably before 1726, its stones reused for the farm estate that replaced it. Nothing remains standing above ground: only fragments of a wall and a coat-of-arms stone of the Fleckenbühl family have been built into the present farm buildings. A visit here means tracing the memory of a vanished castle rather than seeing an actual ruin.
What to know
- No standing remains of the medieval castle survive, only wall fragments and a coat-of-arms stone incorporated into farm buildings.
- The site now forms part of a private farm estate, so access is limited to the surroundings.
- There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is not a developed visitor site.
- The former castle's location, near the Rotes Wasser stream northwest of the village church, is mainly of historical interest rather than a sightseeing destination.
