Blankenstein Castle stands as a ruin above the town of Gladenbach, in the Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf in Hesse. Built before 1237 to guard a stretch of the trade route between Cologne and Leipzig, it went through seizures, destructions and rebuildings amid medieval feuds between local lords. Archbishop Ruprecht of the Palatinate was held captive here until his death in 1480. Only ruins remain today, open to visitors, following a fire in 1647.
