To make a day of it

Burg Weißenstein (Marburg) stands in Wehrda (Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 8th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Weißenstein is a ruined hilltop castle set on a pale sandstone outcrop above the Lahn valley, near Wehrda, a district of Marburg. Archaeological excavations have shown that the site was already in use as early as the Iron Age, though the first proper building, a square structure, dates from the 8th and 9th centuries. The complex was expanded through the 11th century with ring walls, a residential tower and a triangular annex, before a fire destroyed it around the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century. What remains visible today are mainly earthworks and foundation traces on this historically layered ground.
