To make a day of it
Burg Breitenstein stands in Esthal (Landkreis Bad Dürkheim), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. No visits are on record for this building.
The ruins of Breitenstein Castle stand on a narrow rocky spur above the Speyerbach valley in the Palatine Forest. Built in the 13th century, the site actually consists of two adjoining castles separated by a ditch cut into the rock, a legacy of a feudal rivalry between two noble families. Its most striking surviving feature is a shield wall of rusticated ashlar stonework, still standing almost to full height, along with traces of a chemin de ronde showing early Gothic details. Abandoned after its destruction in the 15th century, the castle has kept a rugged, untamed character.
