Madenburg stands in Eschbach (Landkreis Südliche Weinstraße), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Madenburg Castle is one of the largest fortress ruins in the Palatinate, perched on a rocky spur above Eschbach at the edge of the Palatinate Forest. Founded in the early 11th century as an imperial stronghold, it was rebuilt as a fortified Renaissance residence in the late 16th century before being destroyed by the troops of Louis XIV in 1689 and never restored. Visitors today find massive shield walls, the remains of two Renaissance stair towers, and the full outline of an outer and inner bailey.

Frequently asked
- Can you go inside Madenburg Castle?
- It is an open-air ruin, destroyed in 1689 and never rebuilt, so visitors walk among the surviving wall and tower remains rather than enter intact rooms.
- Why was Madenburg Castle destroyed?
- It was demolished in 1689 during the War of the Grand Alliance by French troops under Joseph de Montclar, acting for Louis XIV.
- Where does the name Madenburg come from?
- It likely derives from 'Maidenburg', referring to the Virgin Mary, the 'Maid', to whom the castle may have been dedicated.
- Is the walk up to the ruin steep?
- The ruin lies about 250 metres above the village of Eschbach, so reaching it means a climb through forested terrain.
