To make a day of it
Schloss Deidesheim stands in Deidesheim (Landkreis Bad Dürkheim), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Deidesheim stands in the historic heart of the town, just steps from the market square, on the site of a medieval moated castle. Prince-bishops of Speyer once stayed here during their visits to Deidesheim, before a baroque palace was built in the 18th century over the remains of the stronghold. Burned down and later sold as national property in the early 19th century, the site was subsequently built over with townhouses, so what remains today is the recognizable outline of the old fortified complex rather than a single building open to visitors.
What to know
- The site sits right in the center of Deidesheim, close to the market square.
- Little of the baroque palace remains visible, as most of the area was built over with 19th-century townhouses.
- Part of the surviving buildings, including a former Görg family house, now houses a private restaurant.
- No opening hours, fees or access details are published, so a visit mainly involves viewing the site from the outside amid the old town.
