To make a day of it

Wachtenburg stands in Wachenheim an der Weinstraße (Landkreis Bad Dürkheim), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wachtenburg is a ruined spur castle overlooking Wachenheim an der Weinstraße, on the Haardt ridge at roughly 232 metres above sea level. Built in the 12th century, likely on the order of Conrad of Hohenstaufen, it is regarded as the landmark of the town and offers wide views over the Rhine plain. Its original keep, some 30 metres high, can be partly climbed via a metal staircase leading to a viewing platform. Visitors can also see the remains of a long wall from the former great hall and a curtain wall stretching over 400 metres along the ridge.

This place also features in The Hohenstaufen castles
