Burg Erfenstein stands in Esthal (Landkreis Bad Dürkheim), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Erfenstein Castle is a ruined medieval fortress set on a rocky spur in the Palatine Forest, overlooking the Elmstein Valley near Esthal. The site comprises two distinct parts, Old Erfenstein and New Erfenstein, divided by a ditch cut into the rock. Its most visible feature is a well-preserved keep with a high entrance on the eastern side, alongside remnants of a curtain wall. The ruins remain in a fragile state, worn down over centuries by vegetation and weathering.

What to know
- The site is an open-air ruin with no opening hours or admission fee, as it is freely accessible in the forest.
- Access is on foot from the hamlet of Erfenstein, about 150 metres away as the crow flies, via an uphill forest path.
- The remains are in poor condition, especially the older castle, of which only rubble-filled foundations survive.
- Climbing on the rocks and ruins, particularly the stump of the keep on the upper site, is discouraged as it worsens the ongoing deterioration.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Rhineland-Palatinate.
