Built in the early 1200s by the lords of Gevore, who took the name of Bilstein, the stronghold later passed to the counts of Mark and then to the Archbishopric of Cologne, serving for centuries as a regional administrative seat until the early nineteenth century. Since 1927 the buildings have housed a youth hostel, making it a place for an overnight stay rather than a brief visit. The northwestern wing and central block still show medieval fabric, while the southeastern wing dates from a 1978 rebuilding.
