To make a day of it
Wallanlage Hofkühl stands in Lennestadt (Kreis Olpe), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Wallanlage Hofkühl is an ancient earthwork fortification set on top of the Hofkühlberg, at 485 metres, near the hamlet of Kirchveischede. Its exact age is hard to pin down, but archaeologists tend to place it in the late Iron Age, the La Tène period. Visitors can still make out an oval enclosure of roughly 80 by 60 metres, bounded by an earthen rampart and an outer ditch, with the remains of two former gateways. The hill overlooks the Veischede valley, whose steep slopes once gave the site natural protection.
What to know
- The site sits atop the Hofkühlberg, about 1.5 kilometres southwest of Kirchveischede, reached by an uphill forest path.
- It consists of open-air archaeological remains with no building or visitor facilities on site.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
- Excavations carried out in 1952 turned up only sparse finds, which is why the exact dating remains uncertain.
- Another earthwork, the Wallburg Jäckelchen, can be seen roughly 1200 metres to the northwest, on the opposite ridge.
