To make a day of it

Château du Barret stands in Sanssac-l'Église (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Château du Barret, in Sanssac-l'Église in the Haute-Loire, began as a 15th-century fortified house enclosed within a quadrangular wall and flanked by watchtowers. Alterations carried out in the 17th century opened the structure to the outside world, turning a defensive stronghold into a more livable residence. Visitors can still trace the line of the old enclosure, now partly lowered, and two towers that were later repurposed, one left in ruin, the other serving in turn as a dovecote and an oven. Inside, a monumental stone fireplace bearing a coat of arms, brought from another castle, stands as the main decorative feature.
